Gautam Guha: Major Dhyan Chand was an iconic Indian Hockey Player who is remembered as a magician on Indian Hockey. Major Dhyan Chand is a name that every Indian can say with pride. He was the prime member of Indian Hockey team which brought three Olympic gold medals for India. He had great control over dribbling the ball that no one could ever match. He was honoured with Padmabhushan Award government of India in 1956 for his outstanding contribution in Indian Hockey.
Dhyan Chand was among the nominees considered for India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna for 2014 and there was support for it. But the award was given to C.N.R Rao and Sachin Tendulkar. The family members of Dhyan Chand were disappointed with the government decision. The RTI was filed which suggested that the Prime Minister’s Office had ignored the recommendation from sports ministry on giving the award over Sachin Tendulkar.
Dhyan Chand must be remains a legendary figure in Indian and world hockey. His skills have been glorified in various spurious stories and anecdotes. A number of such these revolve around the fact that Dhyan Chand had an extraordinary control over dribbling the ball. Chand’s birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. The President gives away sport-related awards such as the Rajib Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjun Award and Dronacharya Award on this day at the Rastrapati Bhavan, India.
